In 2012, Li Xiufeng, then 95 years old, was declared dead by her villagers after several attempts to wake her failed.
She was placed in the coffin on February 19, 2012, two days after she was declared dead.
As part of their tradition, the coffin was left open in her home for friends and family to pay their last respects. All of her belongings were also burned as part of the tradition.
The proposed burial date was the 24th of the same month.
The day before the burial, her relatives were horrified when they discovered that her body was no longer in the coffin.
They searched for her and found her in the kitchen preparing lunch.
When she was found, she said:
“I slept for a long time. After I woke up, I felt so hungry and wanted to cook something to eat. I just didn’t understand why I had that lid closed. I had to push it for a long time to get it out."
