If Jesus was God, why did he deny divinity in Mark 10:17-18?
Christology evolved over time. Mark 10:17-18 is correct in context, as Mark’s Gospel portrays Jesus as a human adopted by God as his son, making it natural that Jesus would later deny being God. The Gospels of Matthew and Luke portray Jesus as the son of God, divine as a result of his conception in the nativity accounts. Then, decades later, John’s Gospel portrays Jesus as fully divine and pre-existing. However, the concept of the Holy Trinity, which finally portrays Jesus as a full member of the godhead, only began to be formalised at the start of the third century.
