In Matthew 24, did Jesus say this generation shall not pass before he returns?
( In order to consider the question above, earlier in Matthew 24 verse 3, the disciples asked Jesus of the visible “sign” of his “presence” (invisible), not the common mistaken translation as “coming” or “arrival” or ‘intervention’ as mentioned later in Matthew 25: 31. So, both chapters together, 24 and 25, give a wider picture of events using parables and illustrative comparisons. )
The question above is related to Matthew 24, verse 34, > as Jesus said: “I assure you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things take place.” Holman Christian Standard Bible, of 2003.
The word “generation” does not necessarily mean the “life span of people.” Mose wrote that people usually live ‘70 or 80 years,” as written in Psalm 90:10.
But, a generation back then in the beginning was hundreds of years as Adam lived 930 years, Jared 962 years, and Methuselah lived 969 years.! Genesis 5:5, 20, 27.
However, a comparison to a time-span of the warning before the Flood was 120 years, (Genesis 6:3) but not referring to the length of time that people live as often mis-translated, since Noah was 600 years old when the Deluge came down, plus Noah lived another 350 years after the Flood. (Genesis 9:28) So, the last days of 120 years was less than the normal lifespan of people back then. Adam fathered Seth when he was 130 years old. Genesis 5:3. And Seth was 105 when he became father of Enosh, and Seth lived to be 912 years old. Genesis 5:6–8.
Jesus said > “As the days of Noah were, so the “presence” of the Son of Man will be,” about people not paying attention to the divine warnings. Matthew 24:37-39.
Nowadays, we are in a time span referred to as “the time of the end,” or the “last days,” or “the end times.” It is longer than when parents usually start having a “generation” of children in their 20's and 30's and then the next “generation” of grandchildren happens often when grandparents are 45 -60 years old.
Therefore > another perspective is that the word “generation” can also apply to “that which is generated,’ or ‘that which is produced,’ or ‘the various effects caused by something or someone.” > Let's not forget the “war in heaven” (Revelation 12:12–17) had the Devil and his demon-angels expelled from heaven, so they are down here on earth now generating all kinds of problems and various pressures to hinder the preaching worldwide. Despite opposition, God's people are busy testifying as witnesses using proof-texts in the Bible that Jesus is about to intervene at the ‘war of Armageddon’ when all human governments wiil be eliminated and all bad people also. Revelation 16:14-16, Daniel 2:44, & Matthew 5:5 & 6:9-10 Psalm 37:9-11 +29.
Thus, Jesus left it open for us not to be focused on a “day or hour” (Matt. 24:36, Mark 13:32) … rather for us to be busy with ‘endurance’ to share the “good news of the Kingdom” worldwide … helping people to prepare spiritually, … while there is still some time remaining. > Matthew 24: vss 10-14, + 42-47, Matthew 28:19-20, Revelation 14:6-7.
