In Matthew 7.21, Jesus Christ says that not all Christians will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven, but only the one who does the 'will of the Father' who is in heaven. What is the will of the Father for us as Christian?
The will of the father is stated in John 6 40 ‘For this is the will of him who sent me, that everyone who sees the son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day'
So the will of the father is to believe upon the son (Jesus) and his atoning sacrifice for the remission of sins. That is the ONLY way that one can enter Heaven.
The people who Jesus is condemning in Matthew 7 21–24 are the modern day Pharisees. Those who are trusting in themselves- their works, their self righteous deeds, their driving out demons, their church attendance etc over and above simplistic faith alone in Christ.
Notice the verse doesn't say ‘I once knew you and you walked away from me’ or ‘I once knew you and you lost your salvation’. It says ‘I NEVER knew you’. These folk were never saved to begin with. False converts to dead, man centred religion.
Salvation is, and always has been, by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. Adding to that by any merit or effort on our part fundamentally undermines and corrupts the purity of the gospel message and is a false gospel, since grace and human works or incompatible (Romans 11 6)
‘For it is by grace that you are saved through faith, and this is not of yourselves. It is the gift of God, lest anyone should boast' (Ephesians 2 8–9)
