Why did Jesus let Judas become his disciple if he knew Judas was going to betray him anyway? Was the motive ever found?

Difficult to know. We can speculate however.

When Jesus chose Judas he apparently was a God fearing Jewish man as were the other apostles. Somewhere down the line he went off the rails and became a thief stealing funds from the money bag he was in charge of (John 13:29).

From there his greed for money led him to agree to betray Jesus for a months wages for a laborer or the price of a slave.

And so it happened with Judas as stated in Timothy:

1 Timothy 6:10 English Standard Version

10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.
