Why was Mary at the foot of the cross of Jesus, but Joseph her husband was not?

 Joseph is pretty much a non-character. He moves Mary and Jesus around the landscape, but he has not one word of dialog that I can find anywhere in the entire New Testament. And he just disappears out of the story, melting away as if he had never existed.
