Who did Zeus eat?

 

Zeus ate his first wife, Metis--Titan goddess of wisdom.

He did it to stop a prophecy, the prophecy said she would bear two children.

First, a daughter with wisdom and power to equal his own.

Second, a son who was fated to take his throne, just as Zeus had taken his father's--He feared this more than anything, so he tricked Metis.

He challenged her to change her shape.

When she became a fly.

He swallowed her - Whole.

He thought the problem was solved, but Metis was already pregnant--The daughter, Athena, was not erased, she was later born directly from a split in Zeus's own head. Emerged fully grown and clad in armor--He had swallowed his wife, but her child still found a way out of his body.
