The body of this 22-year-old aspiring actress was found mutilated on January 15, 1947, in Leimert Park, Los Angeles, California (USA). To this day, no one knows who killed her — even though dozens of people have claimed responsibility for the crime.
Elizabeth was found dead in a vacant lot in Los Angeles by Betty Bersinger, a local resident. The woman was walking with her 3-year-old daughter around 10 a.m. when she saw something in the grass that looked like a broken mannequin.
When she got closer, she was horrified to realize it was a naked female body, and she immediately called the police.
Reports from the time indicated that the corpse had been cut in half, one nipple mutilated, and all the blood drained. There was also a macabre cut on her face — her mouth had been slashed from ear to ear, leaving a grotesque “smile.”
Investigators also discovered that the body had been washed, and several organs — including the spleen, heart, and intestines — had been removed. A small incision had been made in her abdomen, and pieces of flesh from her thighs had been inserted into her genital area. Her legs were broken, and her ankles and wrists bore rope marks.
The autopsy revealed that Short had been bound for at least three days, during which she was brutally tortured. Her body showed signs of beatings, cuts, cigarette burns, and flayed skin — all inflicted while she was still alive.
The woman likely died from blood loss caused by her injuries and a severe blow to the head. Signs of asphyxiation were also found.
At the scene, police discovered a man’s shoe print and drops of bloody water near an empty cement sack.
Later, newspapers dubbed the victim “The Black Dahlia” — a reference to her striking beauty.
Former detective Steve Hodel, since 1999, has been convinced that his father, George Hodel — a well-known Los Angeles surgeon — was the killer. After years of investigation, he found a photo album containing pictures of a woman who looked very similar to Elizabeth Short.
He also discovered that his father had lived in the same city and period as Elizabeth, and several people claimed to have seen them together. Moreover, the way the body was handled suggested the killer had medical knowledge.
Elizabeth Short’s body was buried at Mountain View Cemetery in California, and to this day, her murderer remains unknown.
Her case has inspired novels, artwork, and even a 2006 film starring Josh Hartnett and Scarlett Johansson.
