If Christianity didn’t exist in Jesus’ time, what was Jesus asking people to convert to? Was it some form of Judaism?

What was Jesus asking people of his time to convert to?

No one knows.

There is wild disagreement in the bible about what Jesus was teaching.

The first christian writer, Paul, didn’t cite any of the earthly teachings of Jesus, and contradicted what Jesus allegedly taught in the gospels.

In the gospels, Jesus was all about works, saying in Matthew 5:18 that the entire 613 Mosaic laws would remain in effect until the end of time, and yet Paul tossed out the law and works like yesterday’s stinky garbage.

For verily I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass away, not one jot or one tittle shall in any wise pass from the law till all be fulfilled. (Matthew 5:18

According to Matthew 5:18, christians should not be eating shellfish or pork, etc.

And yet elsewhere in the gospels, Jesus clearly contradicted the Mosaic law. For instance, he said it was okay to gather food and work on the Sabbath, which Moses strictly forbade. In fact, Moses had a man executed for picking up sticks on the Sabbath.

Why are christians not observing the entire 613 Mosaic laws if they believe every word in the bible?

At times Jesus sounded like a typical cult leader, when he said his followers should hate their parents, siblings, spouses and children, and not even bother to bury their loved ones when they died. Cult leaders want to replace families and friends with the cult.

At other times, Jesus sounded like a dumbass, for instance when he said his followers should never plan for the future and never worry about how they would be able to eat.

Many christians have starved to death over the ages, so that was terrible advice.

How do we explain this mess?

We can explain the mess by accepting the fact that many different human writers expressed many different human ideas — some evil, some stupid — by putting their words in Jesus’s mouth.

Jesus became a mouth puppet for the writers and redactors of the hole-y bible.

There is no evidence that Jesus was a real person, but if he was, we have no idea what he said, versus the nonsense charlatans put in his mouth.
