HE DRANK TEA WITH THE MEN WHO HAD COME WITH ORDERS FOR HIS DEATH
The Allies had decided to spare Erwin Rommel, yet he was sitting in his own home, drinking tea with the men who had come with orders for his death.
In October 1944, two Nazi officers showed up at Erwin Rommel’s house to tell him that they had found documents linking him to the assassination plot against Hitler after torturing some of his soldiers.
The two men gave him a choice: drink a glass of poisoned wine to save his family, or face a trial followed by execution.
If he drank the wine, the government would announce that he had died of natural causes, and his family would be protected.
If he refused, they would execute his family, and he would be sentenced to death.
Rommel, of course, went upstairs to tell his family the terrible news while armed guards surrounded the house to make sure he would not try to escape.
To protect his family, he had no choice but to take the poison.
After putting on his coat, he got into the car with the three generals who were waiting for him.
They drove to a secluded part of the woods, where the driver and an officer got out to give him some privacy.
With the glass of small pills in his hand, he looked around at his surroundings one last time before taking them and dying shortly afterward.
The Nazi government kept its promise to his family. They held a large funeral service and announced that he had died of natural causes, causing many citizens to mourn the death of their beloved hero without knowing that it was all a trick arranged by Hitler.
If he had survived those few days in 1945, he probably would not have been executed.
British and American generals respected his work and even considered him an asset.
Instead of facing a horrifying execution, he could have retired peacefully or even helped with the reconstruction of Europe.
the evil humans, puny and evil , and so on and so on
… the counter question.
